FreeDOS T2603 Starts Public Testing of the New Kernel and Windows 3.x Support
The March 2026 monthly test release moved a new kernel into integrated distribution testing after it missed FreeDOS 1.4.
The FreeDOS project announced that its March 2026 monthly test release, T2603, included a new FreeDOS kernel with support for running Windows 3.x. FreeDOS 1.4 had intentionally retained the older kernel because the replacement was not ready for a stable distribution.
Moving the kernel into the monthly stream exposed it to more hardware, drivers, memory managers, and applications without relabeling the stable release. The project’s notice asked users to test and report problems and pointed to changes.log for the complete package delta.
The episode illustrates conservative kernel release management: a headline compatibility feature did not override the need for system-level testing before stable adoption.
